Craftsmanship

Our Installation Standards

The same shingle can deliver twelve years or thirty. The difference is almost entirely workmanship. These are the standards we hold on every Better Builders roof.

Craftsmanship Is the Product

Homeowners shop shingle brands, but manufacturers will tell you the same thing we will: the overwhelming majority of premature roof failures are installation failures, not material failures. Nails in the wrong place, reused flashing, unbalanced ventilation, and soft decking left in place will end a lifetime-warranty roof early.

We are a Marine veteran and family-owned company. Semper Fidelis is not decoration on the truck — it is why we do the parts of the job nobody will ever see with the same discipline as the parts they will.

Our Checklist, Step by Step

StepStandard
Property protectionLandscaping, AC units, windows, and driveways covered before the first shingle comes off; magnetic sweep at the end of every day.
Full tear-offDown to the deck. We do not overlay. Overlays hide rot and disqualify the strongest warranties.
Deck inspectionEvery sheet walked and sounded. Rotted, delaminated, or non-nailable sheathing is replaced and documented with photos before it disappears under underlayment.
Ice & water barrierSelf-adhering membrane at eaves to code depth, plus valleys, chimneys, skylights, and all penetrations.
UnderlaymentSynthetic underlayment across the full deck, correctly lapped, fastened per manufacturer spec.
New flashingNew step flashing, valley metal, drip edge, and pipe boots. No reuse.
NailingHand-checked placement in the manufacturer nail zone, correct count for the wind exposure, driven flush — never overdriven or angled.
VentilationIntake and exhaust balanced to the attic square footage so the system actually moves air instead of short-circuiting.
Final walkPhoto documentation of the completed roof, permit inspection scheduled, and a walkthrough with you before we invoice.

Common Questions

FAQ

What is the most common roof installation mistake?

Nail placement. Nails driven above the manufacturer's nail line, overdriven through the mat, or angled so the head cuts the shingle are the leading cause of premature blow-offs — and they void most manufacturer warranties.

Why does attic ventilation matter for shingle life?

Trapped attic heat cooks shingles from underneath and accelerates granule loss. In winter, warm attic air melts snow that refreezes at the cold eave and forms ice dams. Balanced intake at the soffit and exhaust at the ridge solves both.

Should flashing be reused on a replacement?

No. Step flashing, valley metal, and pipe boots should be replaced with the roof. Reused flashing is a leak on a delay timer and is one of the first things a warranty inspector looks at.

How long does a roof replacement take?

Most Colorado single-family homes are torn off and reinstalled in one to two days, with permit inspection following. Complex roofs, extensive deck replacement, or weather delays extend that.
