Functional vs. Cosmetic Damage
Insurers pay for functional damage — impact that shortens the roof's service life. That means a bruise where the asphalt mat is fractured beneath the granules, a puncture, or a crack. They generally do not pay for cosmetic marks that do not compromise the shingle.
The distinction is why two homes on the same street can get different claim outcomes after the same storm. Documentation is everything.
What Inspectors Look For
| Location | What hail damage looks like |
|---|---|
| Shingle field | Random circular bruises that feel soft or spongy under thumb pressure, with granules knocked away and dark asphalt exposed |
| Granules in gutters | Heavy accumulation of granules and grit after a storm, beyond normal shedding |
| Soft metals | Dents in gutters, downspouts, drip edge, vent caps, turbines, chimney caps, and AC condenser fins |
| Ridge and hip | Cracked or split ridge caps — these take the hardest hits and often show damage first |
| Flashing & boots | Dented step flashing, cracked or split rubber pipe boots |
| Around the house | Dinged fence tops, splintered deck boards, dented mailbox, damaged window screens and siding |
What Is Not Hail Damage
Blistering, curling, cupping, and uniform granule wear are age and heat, not storm. So are scuff marks from foot traffic and mechanical damage around a satellite dish install. Reputable inspectors will tell you when what you are seeing is normal aging — a contractor who finds a claim on every roof is not inspecting, they are selling.
- Never climb the roof yourself — most homeowner injuries come from the ladder, not the roof.
- Photograph ground-level evidence immediately after the storm, with dates.
- Note the storm date; carriers tie coverage to a specific date of loss.
- Get an inspection before signing anything a door-knocker puts in front of you.
What to Do Next
Get the roof documented first, then decide about a claim. If the damage is real, we walk the claim with you from the adjuster meeting through the final invoice — see how the claim process works and our insurance and deductible assistance. If it isn't, we'll tell you that and you'll owe us nothing.
Common Questions
FAQ
How big does hail have to be to damage a roof?
It depends on the roof. Aged three-tab shingles can bruise from roughly one-inch hail, while a newer Class 4 impact-rated roof may show nothing at that size. Wind speed and impact angle matter as much as stone diameter.
Can I see hail damage from the ground?
Rarely on the shingles themselves. The reliable ground-level clues are dents in gutters, downspouts, vents, flashing, AC condenser fins, and metal fascia. If soft metals are dented, the shingles were hit with the same energy.
How long do I have to file a hail claim in Colorado?
Colorado law generally gives property owners a limited window to notify their carrier of a storm loss, and many policies add their own prompt-notice requirement. Practically, file as soon as you have evidence — waiting past a season makes the date of loss hard to establish and gives the carrier grounds to deny.
Does an inspection cost anything?
Ours is free. We document the roof with photos, tell you plainly whether the damage is functional or cosmetic, and only recommend a claim when the evidence supports one.
